What to wear when you are backpacking in the wilderness
You will usually have to endure extreme weather conditions while on wilderness hiking trips. Therefore, it behooves you to get dressed properly at all times. Those of us that have been backpacking for some time will layer up on clothing, and then remove or add more as regimented by the weather. Here is a list of garments which you should consider whenever organizing your wilderness walkabout:
Undergarments: seek specially produced wilderness hiking underwear. Polyester and polypropylene is the optimal material used for this sort of underwear, as it allows moisture evaporate away from your body keeping your skin dry. All varieties of undergarments are on the market in these materials including bras, boxers and briefs. Pure cotton underclothing is typically a no-no as it can easily retain moisture leaving you feeling sluggish from the added heft and at the same time cold from the constant contact with your sweat.
Midlayer: Fleece is a favored fabric for walkers in both hot or cool climates. It can still draw water away from your body but it also preserves warmth.
Outerwear: The weather would usually dictate your requirements for outerwear. Outerwear can be created to be invulnerable to wind and water. It usually pays to bring a poncho when backpacking out in the wilderness. Personal inclinations, climate conditions as well as the level of effort will drive one's dependancy on layers..
A Cap: Hats have two main perks at both extremes, they will keep your head warm and dry in cold and wet conditions but can also defend you from the sunshine when it is hot.
Socks: it is always a good idea to wear 2 layers of socks to help reduce the danger of sores as well as to keep your feet dry and insulated. Make certain to pack many pairs, which you can swap into following an overnight stay.
